Waterloo Battlefield

Walking the Waterloo Battlefields - Itinerary

DAY 1:

Local departure by coach then to our hotel in Belgium

DAY 2:
Walk 1: On our first walk we start on the battlefields at Quatre Bras and Ligny, the vital opening shots to the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815, walking the ground where the first shots were fired, in two short battlefield walks.

Walk 2: After lunch we visit the Wellington Museum in Waterloo, see the memorials to fallen officers in St. Joseph's Church, and end the day at the Lion Mound, seeing the battlefield from the top, and visit the impressive Waterloo Panorama, one of the largest painted battlefield panoramas in the world. B

DAY 3:
Walk 3: Today we walk the ground at Waterloo, starting on Wellington's right flank, seeing the ground where the French cavalry charged British squares and walking down to the huge farm complex at Hougoumont. Here we look in-depth at arguably the most important part of the Waterloo battlefield for Wellington, seeing the memorials, original farm buildings and loop-holed walls. We then walk across the battlefield to La Belle Alliance, seeing the battlefield from the French perspective. Lunch nearby.

Walk 4: After lunch we start at Plancenoit, where the Young Guard fought the Prussians, seeing the Church, original buildings and memorials, including the impressive Prussian Memorial. We then walk across the battlefield to Frischermount and Papelotte, defended by Nassau troops. Later we walk across Wellington's left flank seeing where Picton's 5th Division fought and Napoleon's Imperial Guard was broken. We end the day at La Haye Sainte, defended by the King's German Legion, seeing their memorials nearby. B

DAY 4:
In the morning we travel up to Brussels to visit the superb Brussels War Museum with a massive collection of Napoleonic War period uniforms, weapons and equipment.

Walk 5: In the afternoon we return to the Waterloo battlefield and visit the private Napoleonic war museum at Ligny before walking the battlefield at Wavre, where Prussians clashed with French Marshall Grouchy's men leading to France's only hollow victory at Waterloo. B

DAY 5:
To Calais then return home. B
