FULL DAY Today we explore the villages that nestle deep in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds, a landscape of gentle hills and broad horizons that played a central role in the renowned poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, born locally in Somersby. Later we visit Louth, a beautifully preserved Georgian Market town that straddles the River Lud - the medieval church spire, the tallest in the county, can be seen for miles around. FULL DAY This morning we make our way through fields brimming with famous fenland produce to Boston, where it is market day. Once England's second largest seaport in the Middle Ages, the main attraction today is the tower of the Boston Stump, which dominates the town and countryside. We also call at Spalding, the 'garden' town of the Lincolnshire Fens, divided in two by the River Welland which is spanned by seven bridges and boasts a fine medieval church and market place. |
