Classic Germany - Holiday Itinerary
DAY 1: UK to Liege
To Liege for our first overnight stay.
DAY 6: Dresden
We enjoy an included city tour this morning with our local guide. Nicknamed the ‘Baroque Florence’, Dresden is packed with historical buildings and classical architecture, centred around the Zwinger Palace, the Semper Opera House and the Residenzschloss, close to the banks of the River Elbe. Dresden was destroyed by bombs during World War II but has been meticulously restored since then. The final piece in its jigsaw is the Church of Our Lady, which lay in rubble for over 45 years as a stark reminder of the city’s destruction, but whose huge dome now takes its place back in Dresden’s skyline. One of Europe’s most important protestant churches, its restoration is a symbol of peace and international co-operation. (B,D)
DAY 2: Liege to Berlin
Heading eastwards, we continue through Germany to arrive in Berlin, our base for the next three nights. Berlin endured a turbulent 20th century, turning first from cosmopolitan city to capital of the Nazi empire, to then be ravaged by war and divided by the victors. The sights of both parts of the city are now easily accessible and Berlin has regained its cosmopolitan atmosphere. In Berlin we stay at the Park Inn Alexanderplatz Hotel (4*), centrally located and within easy reach of the city’s many attractions. (B,D)
DAY 7: Dresden to Kassel
We head westward, calling in at Weimar, the cultural cradle of Germany, which for many years was home to Germany’s greatest writers, composers and thinkers. Between the wars, Weimar was also the seat of the German parliament. We then continue to the Kassel area for an overnight stay at the Ramada Hotel (4*). (B,D)
DAY 3: Berlin
An included guided city tour this morning to introduce you to some of the main sights. Enjoy the Brandenburg Gate, the Kurfürstendamm, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie and many other sights in the now reunited capital of Germany. (B,D)
DAY 8: Kassel to Liege
Into Belgium and on to Liege and our overnight hotel. (B,D)
DAY 4: Berlin
Enjoy a day to explore Berlin at your leisure or join our optional excursion to Potsdam and Sanssouci Park. Potsdam offers a beautiful collection of palaces, parks and gardens, testimony to the city’s place as the summer residence of the Prussian Royal Family. In the city itself you can explore the Dutch Quarter, a collection of gabled, redbrick houses, built for the Dutch immigrants, and the Baroque Quarter. The jewel in Potsdam’s crown, though, is the Park Sanssouci, Frederick The Great’s retreat. Enjoy the castle, set on a hilloverlooking Potsdam, the Neues Palais, the Orangerie and the perfectly landscaped gardens. (B,D)
DAY 9: Liege to UK
To Calais for the ferry to Dover and then home. (B)
DAY 5: Berlin to Dresden
We travel from Berlin to Dresden, visiting Leipzig and Colditz Castle en route. Leipzig is best known for the humble St Thomas’s Church, where Bach was choirmaster and whose choir still has world renown today, as well as for the peaceful mass demonstrations that ultimately led to the reunification of Germany. Colditz Castle is set high of a cliff-top and is famous throughout the world for its role as a maximum security prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. The war years were a constant battle of wits between the Allied officers imprisoned there and their German guards. We continue to Dresden for a two night stay at the Ramada Resident Hotel (3*). (B,D)
