Settle Carlise Railway

Imagine a magical journey across unspoilt rolling countryside, through hillside tunnels and over spectacular Victorian viaducts… welcome to the famous Settle to Carlisle railway line! Regarded as one of Britain's great rail journeys, the voyage cuts through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and is a must-do trip for any discerning traveller. Our two centre break includes this memorable passage, along with a visit to the famous spa town of Harrogate, magnificent York and a delightful scenic touring excursion of Scotland's wonderful Border Country.

Your Itinerary

MONDAY
From local departure points we head north to the Cosmopolitan Hotel in central Leeds for our two night stay.

TUESDAY

This morning we make our way to the spa and floral town of Harrogate, renowned for its gardens, tea shops and boutiques, before arriving in the magnificent city of York for an afternoon exploring the many sights. Try not to miss the majestic Minster, the old city walls or the famous 'shambles' shopping streets.

WEDNESDAY
Today we leave Leeds and head for Skipton, where it is market day, before joining the Settle-Carlisle Railway (ticket included), one of Britain's great rail journeys. This memorable voyage passes over Ribblehead Viaduct and climbs the famed 'Long Drag' to Ai Gill Summit as it journeys through the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. On arrival in Carlisle we rejoin our coach to reach the Gretna Hall Hotel for two nights.

THURSDAY
Another scenic delight today as we take a full day excursion through the Scottish Border Country. This morning we call at Moffat, where the Woollen Mill has a superb range of local Scottish products, before passing St Mary's Loch to reach Melrose, clustered around its market square and great ruined abbey. We continue past the beautiful, and largely intact, abbey at Dryburgh to the historic town of Jedburgh, where the red sandstone remains of the abbey dominate the skyline. We return via the border town of Hawick, famous for its knitwear and rugby.

FRIDAY
Sadly we leave Gretna Green and return for home.
