Grand Scenic Austria & Switzerland - Tour Itinerary
DAY 1: UK to N. France
To our hotel in Northern France for dinner and an overnight stay. (D)
DAY 7: Salzburg to Vienna via the Salzkammergut
A splendid scenic drive awaits us this morning as we journey through the Salzkammergut, Austria’s lake district, with its striking peaks, clear blue lakes and wooded slopes, before joining the motorway. We reach Vienna for dinner and two nights at the Hotel Ananas (4*), a comfortable hotel within easy reach of the wonderful sights of historic Vienna. (B,D)
DAY 2: N. France to Weggis
We continue into Switzerland to Weggis, where we stay for two nights at the Hotel Hertenstein (3*). Nestled on the shore of Lake Lucerne, the Hertenstein boasts an indoor swimming pool and lakeside gardens. (B,D)
DAY 8: Vienna
Enjoy an included guided sightseeing tour of Vienna, Austria’s elegant capital city, where life revolves around St Stephen’s Cathedral. For many people, Vienna suggests the rhythm of the waltz or the Prater’s big wheel, the Vienna Boys’ Choir or the famous Lippizaner horses. The huge Imperial Hofburg complex also dominates the city centre and the ‘Ring’ thoroughfare features a host of stunning buildings, including the State Opera House, Town Hall and Parliament. (B,D)
DAY 3: Weggis
Enjoy a day at leisure in the picturesque resort of Weggis on Lake Lucerne. With its flower-decked promenades and lakeside vistas, Weggis is a great place to relax. Alternatively, why not join our optional excursion to Interlaken, situated between lakes Brienz and Thun. (B,D)
DAY 9: Vienna to Innsbruck
We travel west along the motorways to reach Innsbruck. The ancient capital of the Tyrol, Innsbruck lies in a beautiful setting, backed by dramatic mountain peaks. The town itself boasts the famous Maria-Theresien-Strasse and the famed little ‘Golden Roof’. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the Hotel Innsbruck (4*). (B,D)
DAY 4: Glacier Express
A day of scenic delights today as we enjoy a splendid included excursion on board the Glacier Express. Enjoy breathtaking scenery as a steep zig-zag ascent takes us to the 6,700 feet of the Oberalp Pass. We descend to Disentis and then traverse the spectacular Upper Rhine Gorge to Chur. Passengers not wishing to join the Glacier Express will travel by coach to Chur. We then enter Liechtenstein before crossing the border into Austria and continuing to medieval Feldkirch for an overnight stay at the Hotel Gasthof Löwen (4*). (B,D)
DAY 10: Innsbruck to Bad Herrenalb
We cross the magnificent Fern Pass and enter Germany to reach the spa resort of Bad Herrenalb for dinner and an overnight stay at the Ramada Treff Hotel (3*). (B,D)
DAY 5: Feldkirch to Salzburg
We enjoy magnificent alpine scenery this morning as we follow the Inn Valley, then continue along the Saalbach Valley entering Germany and driving through the famous Berchtesgadener land. We re-enter Austria to reach Salzburg, where we enjoy an orientation drive. We then settle in for dinner and two nights at the Mercure Hotel Salzburg City (4*). Conveniently situated for exploring the city, the Mercure Hotel offers a quiet but central location, within walking distance of the main sights. (B,D)
DAY 11: Bad Herrenalb to N. France
We continue to Northern France for dinner and an overnight stay. (B,D)
DAY 6: Salzburg
Enjoy a day at leisure in Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart. Explore its picturesque narrow streets, spacious squares and gardens, browse the shops along the quaint Getreidegasse, or alternatively you may wish to climb to the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress. Naturally, there are also few better places to sample the typically Austrian apple strudel at a pavement café. (B,D)
DAY 12: N.France to UK
After breakfast we journey to Calais for the ferry to Dover. We continue home with fond memories of our scenic holiday in Austria and Switzerland. (B)
Optional Excursions · Interlaken · Salzburg guided sightseeing · Vienna by night
