DAY
2: FAIRBANKS SIGHTSEEING & AT LEISURE Get acquainted with Alaska's second largest city as you learn about its native traditions and history. Visit a workshop where local artisans carve graceful, onepiece bowls out of sustainably harvested Alaskan birch. Then, experience the views from the water as an old-fashioned paddlewheel riverboat takes you to a re-created Athabascan village where you can meet and talk with native Alaskans. Visit the kennel of the late Iditarod champion Susan Butcher and hear tales from a senior handler about life on the trail. Enjoy some leisure time to explore Fairbanks on your own. Tonight, enjoy a Salmon Bake Highlight Dinner, a true Alaskan speciality. (FB D) DAY 3: FAIRBANKS - DENALI NATIONAL PARK (2 nights) Go deeper into Alaska's interior as you wind your way through the scenic Tanana River Valley and the heart of the 20th century Alaska Gold Rush. Marvel at the splendid vistas of the Alaska Range and the magnificent snowcapped Mount McKinley. At 20,320 feet, Denali, "the Great One" as the locals call it, is the highest peak in North America and the centerpiece of Denali National Park—the only national park patrolled by sled dogs. Tonight, be enthralled by tales of Alaska's rough-and-tumble characters and history at a Highlight Dinner and Show at the Denali Dinner Theater. (FB HD) Hotel: Denali Bluffs Hotel DAY 4: DENALI NATIONAL PARK SIGHTSEEING & AT LEISURE Denali National Park, encompassing 7,370 square miles of golden tundra, snowcovered mountains and wildlife, is as vast as its namesake mountain is tall. This morning, lose yourself in its grandeur according to your own interests. Perhaps, take an optional morning rafting trip or a guided hike; then gather for a journey into the heart of the park. Your naturalist guide will introduce you to the geography of the area, helping you spot moose, bear, Dall sheep and caribou. Enjoy a light box lunch in the spectacular backcountry before heading back for an afternoon of leisure to do some exploring on your own. (FB L) DAY 5: DENALI - ALASKA RAILROAD - ANCHORAGE (2 nights) Spend your last few hours in Denali as you like. Gaze at the icy mountain, listen to the rushing water of the rivers or just take a stroll and be refreshed by one of the last true wilderness areas in the United States. Then, it's "all aboard" the famous Alaska Railroad for the scenic journey to Anchorage. View the spectacular scenery from your reclining window seat. Be sure to visit the panoramic vista dome car for refreshments and to listen to onboard experts discuss the spectacular landscape outside. From Broad Pass—the highest point on the railroad and along the main route of the great caribou migration in the fall—descend through Hurricane Gulch and Indian River Canyon on your way to the lovely banks of the Susitna River. As you approach Anchorage, travel through the Matanuska watershed, home to moose, bear and even the occasional wolf. (FB) Hotel: Quality Suites. DAY 6: ANCHORAGE SIGHTSEEING & AT LEISURE Anchorage began as a city of tents along the banks of Ship Creek back in 1915. And, as you'll discover on your guided exploration, Alaska's largest city still has something of a small-town feel. Explore the historic downtown district and view the scenic shores of Cook Inlet, which stretch from Anchorage to the remote southeastern town of Homer. Native culture thrives in Alaska; stop at the Ulu Factory for an introduction to the semicircular ulu knife developed by the Inuit people for filleting the fish they caught in the teeming rivers and ocean. Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center where you can walk along wooded paths past indigenous villages and meet with natives from different parts of the state. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to continue your exploration of Anchorage on your own. This evening, join your newfound friends at a Farewell Dinner and toast to your Alaskan adventure. (FB FD) DAY 7: ANCHORAGE - KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK - SEWARD Drive south along the coastline as breathtaking Turnagain Arm and the 3,000- foot peaks of the Chugach Mountains glitter in the morning sun. Visit a wildlife rehabilitation center to see rescued grizzly bears, moose, bald eagles, coyotes and bison. A dramatic journey through Moose Pass takes you into the Kenai Peninsula. From the small town of Seward—named for the U.S. Secretary of State who arranged the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867—embark on a sightseeing cruise into the heart of Kenai Fjords National Park. Enjoy a prime rib and salmon Highlight Lunch while enjoying vistas of the abundant wildlife and magnificent glaciers. Back in Seward, bid farewell to your travelling companions who will be sailing off aboard a Holland America Line ship tonight. You have the evening at leisure to explore this picturesque town with a bustling harbour and historic downtown district filled with quaint shops, art galleries and fresh seafood restaurants. (FB HL) Hotel: Edgewater Hotel. DAY 8: SEWARD - DEPART ANCHORAGE Enjoy a leisurely morning before embarking on a journey along the gorgeous Seward Highway, passing exquisite fjords, jagged peaks and alpine meadows on your way back to Anchorage. Once there, say good-bye to Alaska at Anchorage International Airport or return to the hotel in Anchorage if you'd like to extend your stay. (FB) |
