The
Falklands War 25th Anniversary Tour Itinerary
DAY 1: We fly
from Heathrow to Madrid then on to Santiago, Chile.
DAY 7: Transfer
to Port Howard by FIGAS. Port Howard Lodge (full board),
with its well-manicured lawns, including a putting green,
is the ideal location from which to explore farming life,
Falkland’s-style. A considerable amount of aircraft
wreckage still remains there – 10 or 11 planes (Mirages,
Sky Hawks, Daggers, and a few helicopters) were destroyed
on West Falkland during the war. There’s the chance
to see one of the Falklands’ few remaining large farms
(and one of the most picturesque) in action, with a guided
walking tour of the settlement. Take in the 1982 war museum,
the local school room and even some dolphin-spotting in
the harbour. B,L,D
DAY 2: We arrive
early in Santiago and transfer to our hotel for an overnight
stay.
DAY 3: We fly from Santiago to the Falklands.
Arrive at Mt. Pleasant Airport in the early afternoon. Meet
Leger’s local representative and transfer to your
accommodation, Darwin House, in Darwin, approximately 40
minutes’ drive away. Darwin House, where you will
spend your first two nights in the Falklands (full board),
is a modern farmhouse with bedroom views over Choiseul Sound,
the picturesque settlement, and Wickham Heights. Its waterfront
setting sets the scene for some great wildlife watching.
B,L,D
DAY 4: A guided
tour of the San Carlos, Goose Green and Darwin areas will
take you to the British and Argentine war cemeteries,
as well as across many of the 1982 battlefields, with
insights into the fierce battle for the reinstatement
of a British flag over Goose Green. B,L,D
DAY 8:
Transfer to the capital of Stanley by
FIGAS. Following your arrival at Stanley Airport and prior
to arriving at the Malvina House Hotel (bed and breakfast),
a city tour brings to light the historical and most modern
parts of this small remote capital city, along with a visit
to the museum. First and Second World War and 1982 history
readily abounds around Stanley. B
DAYS
5- 6: Transfer
by a FIGAS (Falkland Islands Government Air Service) 9-seater
Britten Norman Islander aircraft, to Pebble Island. The
relatively low level flying provides passengers with exceptional
views of the Falklands’ coastline and inland scenery.
Pebble Island is one of the larger outlying islands, the
landscape varying greatly from large ponds and moorland,
to long sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. The island was the
site of one of the most dramatic events of the Falklands
War, when a group of British SAS raided the island’s
Argentine occupied airstrip. Wreckage of the destroyed aircraft
can still be seen and visitors to Pebble Island land on
the same airstrip today. Further afield, memorials to HMS
Coventry and to a crashed Argentine Lear Jet can also be
seen. Your accommodation on Pebble Island is at Pebble Lodge
(full board); previously the farm manager’s house
and situated in the centre of the farm settlement. The island’s
25 residents were locked up in this house during the 1982
conflict. Now, although ideally adapted to the needs of
the visitor, it exudes the warm and friendly atmosphere
of a large farmhouse. 2xB,L,D
DAY 9:
A full-day, four-wheel-drive guided excursion of the Fitzroy
and Stanley area will take in the mountain sites (Tumbledown,
William, Harriet and Two Sisters) that became household
names during the 1982 conflict. Afterwards, move on to
Fitzroy, visiting the memorials to the troops lost in
the bombings of logistic ships, Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram.
B
DAY 10: Transfer
to Mount Pleasant Airport by private vehicle. Your route
will take you past many of the 1982 battlefields and, more
historically, relics from the ‘gaucho’ (Argentine
cowboy) era of the 1800’s. Keep your eyes open for
red-backed hawks, en route! Fly to Santiago. B
DAY 11:
We continue
our journey home travelling from Santiago to Madrid. B
DAY 12: We arrive
in Madrid then fly to Heathrow. B
Included Meals: B=Breakfast,
L=Lunch, D=Dinner
Please note:
in order to accommodate local events, we may change the
order of the itinerary.
