DAY 1:
UK to Nice Make
your own way to your chosen airport for the flight to Nice.
Transfer arranged to the Park Inn, Nice (4*) where we spend
the next two nights. (D)
DAY 4: Aix-en-Provence Today we visit historic
Avignon, one of the most fascinating cities in France with
its ancient walls stretching for miles around the city, voted
European City of Culture in 2000. Within its walls lies the
famous Pope’s Palace dating from the 14th century. On the
return journey to the hotel we also enjoy a scenic drive exploring
stunning Provençal countryside. (B,D)
DAY 2: Nice This morning we enjoy a
visit to Cannes, one of the oldest resorts on the French Riviera,
with a superb setting below the Esterel mountain range. Its
exceptionally mild climate has attracted British holidaymakers
since the 19th century. Stroll along the seafront boulevard
La Croisette, a floral delight lined with palm trees, renowned
palace hotels, chic shops and trendy bars. The colourful port
is crammed full of expensive yachts. In the afternoon you
have the opportunity to join our optional excursion to the
exclusive Principality of Monaco. Monte Carlo is known for
its famous casino built in 1878 and the annual Grand Prix.
Enjoy wonderful views of the bay dotted with yachts. (B,D)
DAY 5: Aix-en-Provence This morning we travel
to Nîmes, founded by Emperor Augustus, known as ‘the Rome
of France’ and famous for its magnificently preserved arena.
We continue to Arles, a treasure trove of Roman antiquity
and once the most important city in Roman Gaul with many relics
remaining today including the great amphitheatre. The beauty
of Arles and its surrounding landscapes inspired Vincent Van
Gogh to produce some of his finest work during his stay in
the area. From Arles you can join an optional excursion to
the Camargue, a nature reserve in the Rhône delta, which is
home to herds of white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos.
(B,D)
DAY 3: Nice to Aix-en-Provence After breakfast
we say goodbye to the sophistication of the French Riviera
and head to Provence, an idyllic destination of great natural
beauty with a wealth of landscapes and cultural sights. We
travel via the breathtaking Gorges du Verdon, the French equivalent
of the Grand Canyon, with sheer cliffs and green waters that
appear to stand still. Our final destination is Aix-en-Provence,
boasting numerous ornate fountains and birthplace of the artist
Cézanne. The charming old town is unrivalled anywhere in France.
We spend the next three nights at the Hotel Le Galice (3*).
(B,D)
DAY 6: Aix-en-Provence to Nice After some free time in
Aix-en-Provence we commence our journey back to the French
Riviera with an en-route excursion to Grasse, perfume capital
of the world, offering spectacular views of the coastline.
You will be delighted by the charm of the old squares, cathedral,
outdoor markets, fountains and winding streets. Dinner and
