Holiday Itinerary


DAY 1: TRAVEL TO HEATHROW AIRPORT
Travel to Heathrow Airport for an included overnight stay prior to your early morning flight to Ecuador via Madrid.

DAY 2: ARRIVE QUITO - ECUADOR
This morning you fl y to Ecuador. On arrival you are welcomed to majestic Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Ecuador's stunning capital city.


DAY 3: QUITO
Tour Quito's charming colonial centre, including the Presidential Palace. Visit the Equatorial Line Monument at the "Middle of the World," cross from one hemisphere to another and experience the forces of nature at the "Pathway of the Sun."
Today breakfast and dinner will be included.

DAY 4: QUITO - IMBABURA - OTAVALO
Travel to the enchanting region of Imbabura, known for lakes, towering volcanoes and rich farmlands. Tour a rose plantation hacienda and learn about its production. In Peguche village visit the Andean Instruments Museum, then meet local residents at lunch and enjoy indigenous music and dance. Admire weaving skills of local artisans. See the legendary birds of the Andes at Condor Park. This evening, arrive at a 300-year-old Andean hacienda for an overnight in Old World elegance and enjoy a culinary demonstration.

DAY 5: OTAVALO-CUICOCHA CRATER LAKE-ANDES MOUNTAIN TRAINOPTIONAL HOMESTAY
At the foot of the Cotocachi Volcano, cruise spectacular Cuicocha Crater Lake. Take an unforgettable train ride through the Andes. Visit Salinas, where lunch features regional specialties. Sample "helado de paila," a local fruit ice cream, before returning to historic Hacienda Pinsaqui. Or, choose a homestay* with the Karanki community of La Magdalena on the slopes of Cubilche Volcano.

DAY 6: LA MAGDALENA - OTAVALO - COTOPAXI
Witness the extraordinary community tourism project at La Magdalena. Share in the shepherding and harvesting activities and admire the beauty of their embroidery. Experience the sights and sounds of the Otavalo Market. Later enjoy lunch at Hacienda Guachalá, the oldest hacienda in Ecuador, dating from 1580. Continue south past Quito and capture impressive vistas of legendary volcanoes.

DAY 7: COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK
Journey into Cotopaxi National Park and the high Andean páramo. Marvel at one of the world's highest active volcanoes. Stop at serene Limpiopungo Lagoon, home to rare high altitude birds, wild horses and llamas. At Tambopaxi Hosteria you'll enjoy a delicious lunch with stunning views. Later visit an indigenous highlands market in the village of Latacunga.

DAY 8: COTOPAXI - BANOS - RIOBAMBA
Enjoy a brief stop at San Antonio de Salcedo. Continue down the Avenue of the Volcanoes towards the charming town of Baños surrounded by waterfalls and lush greenery, Baños offers incomparable views and is a gateway to the Amazon. Enjoy leisure time to explore, see the hot springs the town is named for, and visit the Church of the Virgin of the Holy Water. Catch views of the famed Bride's Mantle and Devil's Cauldron cascades on the "Avenue of the Waterfalls." Continue on to Riobamba, a town shadowed by fi ve snowcapped Andean peaks. Stay at Hacienda Abraspungo, decorated in colonial style, and enjoy a traditional Ecuadorian meal and folkloric music.

DAY 9: RIOBAMBA - INGAPIRCA - CUENCA
Tour Riobamba, the Ecuadorian capital under Spanish rule, boasting 18th Century architecture, parks and plazas. In nearby Colta, admire the transparent Colta lagoon and Balbanera Church, the fi rst Catholic church in the country. En route to the southern Sierra, wind through Andean valleys shrouded in clouds and patchwork fi elds of grains. Visit Ingapirca, the largest pre-Columbian archaeological site in Ecuador, and admire the Incan masonry at the Temple of the Sun. Further take in the mystical ambience during lunch at a converted 200-year-old hacienda. Tonight arrive in elegant Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage city.

DAY 10: CUENCA
Cuenca exudes the charm of the Old World. The Spanish used the foundations of Inca palaces for religious and government buildings. Learn about this unique architectural legacy during a tour highlighting the churches and palaces of Calderon Park, the heart of the city, and the blue-domed Old Cathedral built in 1557. Enjoy fresh fl owers at the Mercado de la Flores and visit the renowned Central Bank Museum and botanical gardens. Tour a Panama hat factory to witness local artisans transforming local toquilla palm straw into these famous fi nely woven hats, which actually originated in Ecuador! The remainder of your day is at leisure to browse the shops or stroll the scenic river walk.

DAY 11: CUENCA - GUAYAQUIL
Finish your journey down the Avenue of the Volcanoes and descend through glacial valleys to the Pacifi c coast. Perhaps glimpse the majestic Andean condor as you travel through high cloud forests and Cajas National Park. The Inca Trail runs through this very area, connecting the centres of the ancient empire. Near the coast the landscape opens to coffee, banana and cacao fi elds. At Hacienda Cañas, tour a banana plantation, see a cacao nursery and learn how chocolate is made, then enjoy a lunch of regional cuisine. Arrive in Guayaquil, the gateway to the Galapagos. Visit the Malecón 2000 waterfront area and the 19th Century neighbourhood of Las Peñas. Gather tonight for a special dinner toasting the wonders of Ecuador.

DAY 12: GUAYAQUIL - SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND, GALAPAGOS - EMBARK SHIP
Fly to beautiful San Cristóbal Island, gateway to your Galapagos adventure. Enjoy lunch aboard the m/v Galapagos Legend. At Port Baquerizo Moreno, visit the San Cristóbal Cerro Colorado Tortoise Reserve to learn about the national park's conservation programmes and admire these gentle giants. After exploring the island, stargaze from the deck of your ship and contemplate the wonders of the Galapagos.

DAY 13: ESPANOLA ISLAND (GARDNER BAY & SUAREZ POINT)
Board your panga to visit Gardner Bay. Guarded by a colony of sea lions, the beach is home to Galapagos hawks and endemic fi nches. Swim and snorkel with the marine life, including manta rays and whitetipped sharks. Continue to the volcanic terrain of Suarez Point and during a nature walk watch for hooded mocking birds, lava lizards, Sally Lightfoot crabs and Blue-footed Boobies. Discover Waved Albatross at the world's largest colony. Finally, visit the Soplador blowhole where water shoots 75 feet into the air..

DAY 14: FLOREANA ISLAND (POST OFFICE BAY & CORMORANT POINT)
Land at storied Post Offi ce Bay, named for a barrel left in 1793 by Captain James Colnett as a "post offi ce" for passing sailors. Continue the tradition and leave a letter. Snorkel with green sea turtles or search for Darwin's fi nches. Then sail to Cormorant Point and spot sting rays and reef sharks. Learn about the ecosystem's unusual plants and perhaps observe a small colony of penguins. Enjoy another chance to snorkel and swim near the playful sea lions!

Galapagos

DAY 15: GUAYAQUIL - SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND, GALAPAGOS - EMBARK SHIP
Today visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. See the giant tortoises from the station's breeding programme, including Lonesome George, the last of his species. Trek through the Santa Cruz highlands to Cerro Chato, fi nd more giant tortoises and savour some organically grown Galapagos coffee. Walk inside dormant lava tubes to gain insight on how these islands formed. Enjoy time to explore Port Ayora town.

DAY 16: DAPHNE ISLAND - DISEMBARK SHIP - BALTRA ISLAND - GUAYAQUIL
Enjoy panoramic views as you circumnavigate Daphne Island. Look for marine iguanas, fur seals and crabs teetering along the rocky shore. Bid farewell to the Galapagos and return to Guayaquil.

DAY 17: GUAYAQUIL - DEPART FOR HOME

DAY 1: TRAVEL TO LONDON HEATHROW

DAY 2: QUITO, ECUADOR - TOUR BEGINS

Arrive in Quito and enjoy your evening at leisure.

DAY 3: QUITO - PUERTO FRANCISCO DE ORELLANA (COCA) - AMAZON RAINFOREST
Fly over the snowcapped peaks of the Andes to the Amazon Basin. Arrive at Puerto Francisco de Orellana, locally known as Coca, where you will be greeted by a naturalist guide. Embark on a two-hour journey by motorised canoe down the Rio Napo, one of the Amazon's many tributaries, and arrive at your lodge's private reserve. Take a 30-minute walk along a raised boardwalk to Lake Pilchicota, where native paddlers await with dugout canoes to carry you across the lake to your eco-lodge. Relax and take in the beauty of your surroundings before joining a "birds and butterfl ies observation walk." After dinner, observe nocturnal wildlife during a short walk in the rainforest.

DAY 4: AMAZON RAINFOREST
Begin your day at sunrise, taking advantage of the cool morning hours when the animals are most active. Observe the lush fl ora and keep a sharp eye out for spotting incredible birds, insects and monkeys that call the Amazon home. Join a hike to bird watch or explore "terra fi rma" and "igapo" (fl ooded land), where giant kapok trees can be observed. Sample a picnic lunch alfresco, then take a leisurely-paced hike along the Napo River or embark on a more demanding drive/journey to observe the "titi" monkey. Afternoon excursions offer another chance to view local wildlife. Retire to the lodge for a relaxing dinner.

DAY 5: AMAZON RAINFOREST
Start the day with a scenic hike along the Lagartococha path. Hop aboard a riverboat and navigate through murky waters teeming with anacondas and caimans, and spot Amazon squirrels and capuchin monkeys if you are lucky. Try piranha fi shing by canoe on the Igapo and be on the lookout for lounging sloths and playful otters along the shoreline. Climb the nearby observation tower, Sumaco Mount, for views of local birds and possibly the volcanoes of the Andes. Return to the lodge and look for caimans, bats and nocturnal birds. After a day fi lled with adventure, recount the magic of your trip over dinner with your fellow travellers.

DAY 6: PUERTO FRANCISCO DE ORELLANA (COCA) - QUITO
Head back through Coca and on to Quito to start your standard tour.

Please Note: This extension is hosted by a local representative who will provide all included services. Taxes or fees to be paid upon exiting domestic airports are approx £6. During your stay in the Amazon rainforest at the eco lodge, all meals are included and all excursions are led by a naturalist guide with expert knowledge of the region. Important Information
• There is an approx 31 USD airport departure tax from Guayaquil, payable upon exiting the country. This fee is at your own expense.
• Suggested tipping on board cruise: £7 per person, per day for the on-board crew and £5 per person, per day for the naturalist guides.
• Smaller buses, which may not be lavatory equipped, may be used on this programme. In this case, frequent stops are made during travel periods.
• The days and order of sightseeing may change to best utilise your time on tour. The itinerary is subject to change due to weather conditions or National Park directives. The captain may deviate from the published itinerary for any reason he deems advisable.
• The normal daily schedule when on board the ship consists of a shore excursion immediately following breakfast, then return onboard for lunch followed by an afternoon shore excursion. Transfers to/from the boat are by small boats called ’pangas’. Landings are either ’dry’ or ’wet’ and you might have to wade ashore in shallow water. At all times you are accompanied by your naturalist guide. Shore excursions normally last 2 - 2 1/2 hours each. In some cases, the terrain can be a little strenuous. Passengers should consult their doctor should they have any concerns regarding their physical condition. Unfortunately, wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on this trip. In addition, passengers who require assistance walking or who travel with oxygen tanks will not fully enjoy this trip and Collette strongly recommends a different Collette tour.
• Complete passport information is required 60 days prior to departure to confirm flight arrangements to The Gala´pagos
• Each client is responsible for proper documentation and medical inoculations that may be required and/or recommended to participate on this tour. Please contact your local travel clinic or doctor for specific details on the destinations you are travelling to and from.
• Children must be seven years or older. Children under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult. Children must be younger than 12 years for a child reduction to apply. Child price only applies if sharing a cabin with 2 adults.
• Highest elevation is approximately 8,550 feet/4 kilometres at Quito. We recommend consultation with your G.P. to confirm your fitness to travel at a high altitude.
• * The optional homestay at La Magdalena must be pre-booked. SPace is limited. Rooms are simple and have private bathrooms. Dinner is included with the homestay. Otherwise you may overnight at the Hacienda. Please make your decision known at the time of booking.
• The currency of Ecuador is the USD. All taxes and fees quoted are payable in USD.
• Due to flight schedules, travellers from airports other than London will need to fly to London on the day before departure. Your overnight hotel accommadation is included in the price of your holiday.
