England's Lakeland
|
![]() |
The English Lakeland must surely be one of the best-loved, and most beautiful, regions in the British
Isles. Here the sight and sound of water is never far away, adding a magic and serenity that draws
visitors back time and time again. Our holiday base is Kendal, often referred to as the 'Gateway to
the Lakes'. This ancient market town is the focal point for the area and has many historical buildings,
fascinating craft and curiosity studios, a good shopping centre, and a superb Norman castle. |

FULL DAY Our full day tour takes in the lakeland delights of Bowness, Coniston and Lakeside. Our first visit is to Bowness-on- Windermere, probably the most popular tourist haunt, with its quaint alleyways and lively lakeside quays before making our way to Coniston, overlooked by the craggy Old Man of Coniston Mountain towering over the town and lake. On our way back to Kendal we drop into pretty Lakeside where there is an opportunity to take an optional 'steamer' cruise on Lake Windermere. FULL DAY Our tour today takes in northern Lakeland, stopping first at busy Ambleside, considered to be the centre of the Lake District and a favourite with tourists and fell walkers alike. By the banks of Thirlemere and Grasmere we come to Keswick, a market town set on the shores of Derwentwater where there is time to explore this lively centre. This afternoon we head for the shores of Ullswater, one of the largest and most beautiful lakes, before ascending Kirkstone Pass with its breathtaking lake and mountain views. |
