Coast to Coast
- Holiday Itinerary
SATURDAY From local
departure points we travel to the north-west for an overnight
stop.
SUNDAY Soon the
Lake District fells and mountains are on the horizon, and
we divert from the motorway to reach Bowness, the popular
tourist centre on Lake Windermere. Here there’s an opportunity
for a cruise to Ambleside before we climb over awesome Kirkstone
Pass, and along the shores of Ullswater, to the Scottish border
and on to Dumfries, where we stay for three nights.
MONDAY A morning tour past romantic
Sweetheart Abbey to follow the shore of the Solway Firth,
with wonderful views of the Lakeland mountains, to reach the
dignified town of Kirkcudbright. Here explore the harbour,
streets of old merchants' houses, and a beautifully restored
High Street. The afternoon is free at Dumfries, a town with
lots of Robert Burns’s memorabilia. The celebrated poet died
here in 1796, aged 37.
TUESDAY A full day excursion to
Edinburgh, by way of a scenic journey through the countryside
of the Scottish Borders. Set below rocky Arthur's Seat, and
dominated by the historic castle, the Old and New Towns are
separated by Princes Street Gardens. Princes Street itself
is Scotland's bestknown shopping boulevard, whilst the Royal
Mile, chock-full of historic buildings, descends from the
castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
WEDNESDAY Leaving Scotland, following
the route of ancient Hadrian's Wall, we call at Hexham where
a stately abbey overlooks the market place. We reach Durham
during the afternoon, with time to view the magnificent cathedral,
set high on a cliff above a loop of the river. Then it’s on
to the old railway town of Darlington, where we stay for three
nights.
THURSDAY Full day tour to the
North York Moors Coast and
National Park. In the morning to
Whitby, a picturesque fishing port
and seaside resort combined,
overlooked by the ruins of an
abbey.We climb into the National
Park, a beautiful moorland area, to
call at the village of Goathland,
better known as 'Aidensfield' in TV's
‘Heartbeat'.
FRIDAY Morning excursion to Richmond,
gateway to Swaledale, which has one of England's largest market
places, guarded by an ancient castle, medieval gateways, and
a tangle of unspoilt streets and alleyways with many fine
Georgian buildings.
SATURDAY Return to our original
departure points and home.
