Settle & Carlise Railway

This is a unique opportunity to see England's finest scenery from a different angle - opening a wonderfully different perspective on England's most enchanting scenery. Explore by train and lake steamer the beautiful Lake District like you have never done so before… it's a real trip of a lifetime for those of you who love boats, trains, and the Great British countryside at its very best.

Itinerary

MONDAY

We depart by train late morning from London's Kings Cross station to Leeds, where we change trains before embarking on one of the most spectacular rail lines in England - 'The Settle & Carlisle'. Across the famed Ribblehead Viaduct, the line uses tunnels and viaducts through the mountainous landscape, before descending into the tranquil Eden Valley and to the border city of Carlisle. Changing trains we head south through Penrith and the Cumbrian Fells and alight at Oxenholme Lake District for a transfer to our hotel in Kendal.

TUESDAY
No trains today, but instead two lake cruises! Firstly we drive to Pooley Bridge in the northern lakes for a cruise on Ullswater (ticket included), probably England's most beautiful lake. We cruise the whole length to Glenridding before joining our coach and the drive to Keswick to enjoy an afternoon cruise on Derwentwater (ticket included)..

WEDNESDAY
We take the short train ride from Kendal to Windermere then transfer through Ambleside to Coniston and join the National Trust owned Steam Yacht 'Gondola' for a cruise on Coniston Water (ticket included). We return to dry land, and head south to Haverthwaite, where we enjoy a steam-hauled train ride to Lakeside (ticket included) at the southern end of Windermere. Here we embark on one of the famous 'steamer' boats for a cruise on Lake Windermere.

THURSDAY
South to Lancaster where we start a rail journey around the stunning Cumbrian coast via Carnforth (setting for the film "Brief Encounter") and across the Kent Viaduct, to Grange-over-Sands. Then it's over Leven Viaduct, through Ulverston, Barrow-in-Furness and along the coast to the Lake District's only coastal village - Ravenglass. Here we join the miniature steam (mainly) worked Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway for a 40-minute journey through lovely Lakeland scenery to the foot of England's highest mountains. After a pleasant break we join the train and ride back to Ravenglass. Then it is back to the 'big railway' and continue along the coast to Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport and onto Carlisle. Here we change trains for the return to Oxenholme Lake District and transfer to our hotel.

FRIDAY
By train from Oxenholme Lake District to Carlisle before heading south over the Settle and Carlisle Line to Leeds and a chance to look at any scenery you may have missed on the way north! At Leeds we join the London train and journey back to Kings Cross.
