Excursions and Visits

Day 3 Ziller Valley and Mayrhofen (included)
In operation since 1902, the Zillertalbahn is one of Austria’s most famous and popular narrow gauge railways. It chugs along through the lovely scenery of the valley (at a maximum speed of 22 mph!!!) to the picturesque ski resort of Mayrhofen where you’ll have some free time. During the day we will also see the pretty village of Fügen where the Christmas hymn, ‘Silent Night’ was penned during the 19th century.

Day 4 Salzburg with walking tour (optional)
Our picturesque journey to Salzburg takes us past the Wilder Kaiser and Loferer Steinberge mountains. Salzburg is famed as the setting for the film ‘The Sound of Music’. Our walking tour with local English speaking guide reveals the main sights of the city featured in the film along with many other attractions. For one of the best views over the city climb to the terrace of the fortress of Hohensalzburg and explore the landscaped gardens of the beautiful Mirabell Palace.
Day 5 Innsbruck (included) with Guided Sightseeing tour (optional)
En route to Lake Garda we call at the ‘Capital of the Tyrol’ – Innsbruck, which sits snugly beneath the lofty Karwendel Alps. The city came into prominence in the 15th century, when the Emperor Maximilian based his imperial court here. Many fine buildings are a testament to the city’s regal past, including the famous Golden Roof and the Hofburg Palace, whilst Maria Theresien Strasse is also a must. Our optional guided sightseeing tour takes in these famous sights. We’ll also see the Olympic Ice Stadium, the Berg Isel ski jump and the interior of the Wilten Basilica, said to be the most beautiful church of its kind in the Tyrol.
Day 6 Lake Garda tour (included)
A full-day tour around Italy’s largest lake. We see the lovely town of Malcesine with its quaint cobbled streets clustering beneath the 13th century Scaligero Castle, before reaching Garda on the eastern side of the lake. From Sirmione on the southern shores you can take a cruise on a boat (optional) to Gardone, an elegant resort, once popular with the Italian aristocracy, but nowadays known for its natural beauty and exotic trees and plants.
Day 7 Venice (optional) with Lagoon Cruise (optional)
No visit to northern Italy would be complete without a visit to Venice. Magnificent buildings are interwoven by ornate bridges and canals. See the Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace and perhaps stroll through the town to the Rialto Bridge, picturesquely spanning the Grand Canal. Also why not enjoy an optional cruise around the Venice Lagoon, which gives you a view of St. Mark’s square from the water and sails past the islands and the Lido, Venice’s seaside resort. O solo mio!

Your Hotels
You will stay for three nights in the Tyrolean resort of Niederau at the 4-star Hotel Sonnschein. See page 36 for hotel description. You will then stay for three nights at the 3-star Hotel Du Lac in Gardone on Lake Garda. The hotel enjoys a lake-front location and offers a restaurant, bar, lounge and terrace with lake view. All bedrooms have T.V., telephone and hairdryer.
Your overnight stays in the Cologne area will be in a city-style hotel.
