the Somme Tour Itinerary
DAY 1: We arrive
in northern France for four nights.
DAY 4: Pozières to Butte de Warlencourt
(included) Our final day begins at Pozières, where
the Australians fought so valiantly. We visit Delville Wood
where a small group of South Africans held fast for six
days. At Ginchy and Lesboeufs, we visit the Guard’s Cemetery
and memorial. The impressive 41st Division memorial at Flers
is next, followed by Newfoundland Park, with its preserved
trench system, and finally, the Butte de Warlencourt, where
the actual battle came to an end on 18th November 1916.

DAY 2: First Day of
the Somme (included) We follow
the line from Gommecourt to Thiepval, taking in Serre’s
battlefield cemeteries and preserved trenches in the Sheffield
Memorial Park. At Beaumont Hamel, we visit Sunken Lane,
Hawthorn Mine Crater and Newfoundland Park. The day ends
in Thiepval, with a visit to the Ulster Tower memorial,
Thiepval Memorial and Visitor Centre. B
DAY 3:
No Man's Land (included) Continuing
the story of 1st July, we start at Mash Valley, the longest
distance across No Man’s Land that day, then Lochnagar Mine
Crater, following the front line to Fricourt. We see where
Captain Billie Neville kicked footballs over the top at
Montauban, signalling the advance, then begin our look at
the later fighting on the Somme by examining the fighting
for Mametz Wood. B
DAY 5:
Travel
to Calais for the return journey home. B
