DAY 1: ARRIVE IN RIO DE JANEIRO (3) Welcome to spectacular Brazil! Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel, where rooms are ready for early check in. The rest of the day is free for you to begin exploring the lively city on your own. This evening, relax over a delicious dinner followed by a colourful Folklore and Carnival show. DAY 2: RIO DE JANEIRO Take a full day tour of Rio. Start with a cog-train ride through Tijuca Forest and up Corcovado Mountain. Disembark and walk up to the top lookout where the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer stands. Descend, then pass by Rio's worldfamous beaches, Ipanema and Copacabana, to board a cable car for a two-staged ascent up Sugar Loaf Mountain. Enjoy the splendid views of the city. Drive past the Candelaria Church, Saint Sebastian Cathedral, Lapa Arches, Municipal Theatre and more. Your evening is free. (B L) DAY 3: RIO DE JANEIRO A full day free. Sightseers can choose between several optional tours, including a full day schooner cruise from a nearby village with lunch and swimming, a half day jeep excursion through a rainforest and a selection of walking tours, or simply relax at your beachfront hotel. (B) DAY 4: RIO DE JANEIRO - IGUASSU FALLS Transfer for your flight to Iguassu Falls. This afternoon, your Tour Director will show you the magnificent Brazilian side of the Falls. The thundering roar and plunging cascades of water make this one of nature's wonders. (B D) Hotel: Mabu Thermas & Resort (SF) DAY 5: IGUASSU FALLS - BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (4) On the Argentine side of the Falls, board the Ecological Train and ride to a splendid viewpoint to see the Devil's Throat. Transfer for your flight to Buenos Aires. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. This evening, delight in dinner and an exciting performance of the sensuous Tango. (B D) Hotel: Hotel Elevage (F) (4 nights) DAY 6: BUENOS AIRES Start sightseeing with views of the Plaza de Mayo, including the Casa Rosada, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and Cabildo. On to San Telmo and colourful La Boca. Drive down Avenida 9 de Julio and see Teatro Colon. After viewing Palermo Park make a guided visit of Evita's Museum, which tells the story of this larger than life icon. Finally, visit the Recoleta Cemetery, where you will find the graves of many of Argentina's leaders, including Evita Peron. The afternoon is at leisure. Tonight, savour a special 'Be My Guest' home-hosted dinner featuring traditional Argentine cuisine and wine. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with a local family in their own apartment home, and learn about their daily lives and Argentine culture. (B BG) DAY 7: COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO EXCURSION Transfer to the Buenos Aires Pier for the hydrofoil ride to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. Founded in 1680 by Portuguese explorers, Colonia has a delightful colonial ambience, with twisting cobblestone streets and colourful houses reminiscent of Old Lisbon. The well-preserved historic quarter was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. See the city on a tour, and then explore on your own. There are museums, arts and crafts shops, a yacht harbor and cafés, all vying for your attention. Later this afternoon, return by hydrofoil to Buenos Aires. Your evening is at leisure to try one of the many tempting restaurants and cafés. (B L) DAY 8: BUENOS AIRES A full day at leisure to take in Buenos Aires at your own pace. Your Tour Director will have many suggestions, including a day trip to the Pampas to learn the daily life of the Gaucho (Argentine cowboy) or a fun and informative Tango lesson (both own expense). For shoppers, the downtown area is full of gallerias and boutiques. Or, stroll through the fashionable Recoleta. The choice is yours. (B) DAY 9: BUENOS AIRES - BARILOCHE (2) Fly to Bariloche, scenically set on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi. The balance of the day is free to stroll through the picturesque town on your own. For chocolate lovers, you will find small chocolate factories manufacturing the delicious "Bariloche" chocolate. (B D) Hotel: Hotel Edelweiss (SF) (2 nights) DAY 10: BARILOCHE Sightseeing takes you along the scenic shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi. See Playa Bonita, then travel through stunning scenery to Campanario Mountain. Take a chairlift ride to a lookout point at the summit. There is time to admire the vistas before you travel to the Llao Llao Peninsula and over the Angostura Bridge for the splendid view. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B) DAY 11: BARILOCHE - PUERTO VARAS, CHILE (2) Coach to Villa La Angostura and take a catamaran ride to the Quetrihúe Peninsula. Here, step into the silence of the forest of ancient Arrayanes trees. There is time to enjoy your pristine surroundings before returning to Villa La Angostura. Then, board a coach and travel along the lakes and through the splendid scenery of the Andes. Continue to the border with Chile, and on to Puerto Varas. (B L) Hotel: Hotel Cabanas del Lago (F) (2 nights) DAY 12: CHILOE ISLAND EXCURSION A full day excursion takes you to historic Chiloe Island. First, head to Puerto Montt for a panoramic view of the city. On along the Pan-American Highway, then cross the Chacao Strait by ferry to the village of Chacao. See the charming wooden churches, little houses and Alerce cypress trees. Stop in Ancud, the island's capital, and visit the fortress of San Antonio. After lunch, continue to Puñihuil, set on the Pacific Ocean. From here, a boat ride takes you to some small islands to see Magellan Bariloche lies on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi and Humboldt penguins. Later, return to Puerto Varas. (From late March through early October, instead of Puñihuil, take a boat ride along the Chepu River to Coluco Lagoon to see the unique birdlife of the area.) (B L) DAY 13: PUERTO VARAS - PUERTO MONTT - SANTIAGO (2) Drive to Puerto Montt and board your flight to Santiago, Chile's lively capital. Upon arrival, see some of the highlights of the city. Pass Club Hípico, a beautiful horseracing track, Parque O'Higgins and the Cousiño Palace, built between 1870 and 1878 for the wealthy Cousiño family. Then head along the famous Alameda, Santiago's main avenue, to the heart of the city, seeing San Francisco Church and Santa Lucia Hill. Next, visit the Plaza de Armas and the Pre-Colombian Art Museum, with one of the most complete collections of ceramics, ancient textiles and relics of American culture. On to the Central Market, the main market for fish and seafood, for lunch. Afterward, cross the Mapocho River to the bohemian Bellavista district and San Cristóbal Hill to enjoy the splendid views of Santiago and the Andes Mountains. Finally, pass through the modern residential areas of the city and the bustling Providencia shopping zone. (B L) Hotel: Santiago Park Plaza - Providencia (SF) (2 nights) DAY 14: SANTIAGO A free day. Perhaps take an optional full-day excursion to the beautiful coastal region including the historic port of Valparaiso and the chic seaside resort of Viña del Mar. There is also a half-day optional trip to the Concha y Toro Winery including a tasting. Tonight, savour a Farewell Dinner with wine at a favourite local restaurant, complete with traditional music and dance. Then a city tour shows you the Cathedral, the Church of San Francisco, and more. (B) Hotel: Novotel Lima (F) DAY 17: LIMA - CUZCO - SACRED VALLEY Fly to Cuzco. Head into the Sacred Valley and stop at the market in Pisac. Later, at Ollantaytambo, a walking tour introduces you to the quaint village. Finally, travel to your hotel in Yucay. (B L D) Hotel: Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay (F) DAY 18: MACHU PICCHU EXCURSION A highlight full day tour to Machu Picchu. Your guide will show you the "Lost City of the Incas." There is time to stroll through the ruins on your own before returning to the Sacred Valley. (B L) Machu Picchu is built on a steep hill, with uneven pathways, rocky terrain and no handrails. Visitors should be in good health and be able to walk without assistance. DAY 19: SACRED VALLEY - CUZCO This morning, transfer back to Cuzco. After lunch, a half-day tour shows you the best of the city. Visit Sacsayhuaman, Tambomachay, the Temple of the Sun, the Koricancha, Kenko and Pucapucala. (B L) Hotel: Novotel Cuzco (F) The altitude of Cuzco is 11,444 feet. DAY 20: CUZCO - LIMA Fly to Lima. Upon arrival, the rest of the day is free.
