FRIDAY We meet up at St Pancras Station late morning to join the East Midlands Trains service, via Derby, to Belper. On arrival we continue by road to the National Tramway Museum where you'll be given a genuine old penny to use on your first tram ride. The painstakingly restored tram takes you through a perfectly constructed period street and on to open countryside with lovely views. Afterwards we continue by road to our hotel in Derby for three nights. SATURDAY By road to Staveley to visit Barrow Hill - Britain's only surviving operational roundhouse engine shed before making our way to the elegant surrounds of Chatsworth House (admission included). This delightful house is set in acres of landscaped grounds in the heart of the Peak District and is often referred to as the 'Palace of the Peaks'. This afternoon we join the Peak Rail service from Rowsley to Matlock where we have free time in this popular tourist centre. SUNDAY This morning we travel by train to Duffield where we join the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway - a community-owned and locally-managed venture through Eccelsbourne Valley, known as Derbyshire's Gentle Valley, as it reaches Wirksworth at the gateway to the Peak District. This afternoon we relive the magical bygone era of steam with a visit to the Midland Railway Centre (admission included) and reminisce with a steam train ride through the lovely Derbyshire countryside. MONDAY A morning at leisure in Derby before we depart by train to Leeds and to our hotel for a three night stay. TUESDAY A full day to York, leaving from Leeds Central Station. On arrival we include a guided tour on the famous Yorkshire Belle tourist bus (ticket included), and in the afternoon there is free time to visit the excellent National Railway Museum or perhaps take in the sights of the Shambles and the magnificent York Minster. WEDNESDAY This morning we travel by road to Haworth, where the Bronte Parsonage was the setting for the Doctor's Surgery in The Railway Children. We continue to Embsay where we take a ride through the surrounding countryside on the Embsay Steam Railway to Bolton Abbey station (ticket included) where the village is a fifteen minute walk away. THURSDAY This morning we depart from Leeds and return to Kings Cross to complete our magical journey. |
