Visit
the key locations of Anglo-Allied, French and Prussian activity
in a campaign that shaped the future of modern Europe. Waterloo is rightly regarded as being amongst
one of the greatest battles of history. A tightly contested
battle that matched two brilliant generals, Napoleon and
Wellington, it was as Wellington said “the nearest
run thing you ever saw in your life”.
Waterloo
Campaign 4 Day Itinerary
DAY 1: To Belgium
for a 3-night stay.
DAY 2: The
Prussians Defiant (included)
We travel to Ligny where there will be a guided tour of
the Ligny-Sombreffe battlefield. In the afternoon, we travel
to Quatre Bras. Our guide will give an overview of the terrain
and explain what happened and where. We can then explore
the accessible parts of the battlefield for ourselves. B
DAY 3:
Wellington Holds the Line (included) Near Mont St. Jean, we’ll
undertake a tour of the Waterloo
battlefield. We look at the opening of the
battle: Wellington’s deployment; D’Erlon’s
attack; Picton under pressure; Ponsonby’s
counterattack. We move on to
Napoleon’s viewpoint at La Belle Alliance.
We then consider The Fight for the
Centre: walking the route of the Imperial
Guard from Belle Alliance to Wellington’s
centre, via the location of the major
French cavalry attacks. La Garde Recule:
up the slope and across the rise to where
Wellington’s final reserve awaited the last
attack. We have time to explore
Wellington’s centre-right, visit the local
attractions of the visitor centre or the
panorama and climb the Lion Mound.
Return to our hotel, pausing at Waterloo
town to view the location of Wellington’s
headquarters, and where he wrote his
Waterloo dispatch. B
